Willow Wood Refuge

Willow Wood Refuge is a pixelated, side-scrolling adventure game where you play as Tyst, a mute outcast living in the woods. After a nearby town gets annihilated by some unknown magic, you must delve deep into the nearby cave to keep the survivors alive and well.

Screenshots

These screenshots are of the main parts of the game; mainly exploration and cooking. The goal of the game is to cook certain meals that certain characters need to be healed. To do this, you must delve deeper and deeper into the nearby cave to find rare ingredients. The cave was designed to easily make the player lost unless they remember the path back to the entrance, and the dither shading was implemented to give the cave more atmosphere, as well as making the spiders harder to see. The screenshot of the dialogue box in the top left shows my main contribution to the game; character dialogue between two characters. These scenes will be picked from a list at random whenever you leave the cave, and will give the players more backstory, as well as fleshing out each character's personality and their reaction to their home being destroyed.

What I Did

I was the sole writer for this project, so my main contribution was drafting the background information, character descriptions and their relationship to each other, and writing multiple scenes for each character interacting with a different one. While my main focus was writing all of the dialogue scenes, I also assisted with the dither shading by creating the dither pattern that was used in the cave.
